We woke up early this morning, with big plans to nero into town in time for breakfast.

Probably one of our earliest hiking starts yet! And I was the first person awake, so here’s a picture of luke sleeping for a change!

More signs from our walk today. This is a new design that I haven’t noticed anywhere else.

We saw some of our first Joshua trees today. Signs that the desert is changing!

We totally made it in time for breakfast. Really couldn’t have timed it better if we had planned it–got to the trailhead not ten minutes before the hostel owner can by in his huge station wagon dropping off a crew of eight or so hikers heading back out to the trail!

One of the signs in town, which is under lots of renovation right now. Sidewalks and roads in the ‘village’ area all torn out and being replaced.. We overheard a conversation among locals about how they’re trying to make it look like ‘aspen’ .. They weren’t so into it, saying big bear is big bear! Some people like that!

Spent most of the morning shopping for pur resupply (and getting stuck on a thirty minute bus ride that only saved us a mile and a half of walking), and then got back to the hostel where we enjoyed chatting with other hikers, calling our moms (happy mother’s day!), and waiting in line for the one computer – sorry didn’t get much blogging done there, we are on a mission to order a new sleeping bag.

Our very best trail meal so far was at this Himalayan restaurant. Spicy, delicious, fresh veggies and cheese curries plus tandoori chicken & lamb. Amazingly we still had room later for dinner #2 with aloha - super tasty chicken wings and a surprisingly excellent beer selection at the little sports bar next to the hostel.

We came back afterwards and managed a little conversation around the fire before totally crashing. Hiker midnight comes a lot earlier for us than some of these kids out here fresh out of college (or high school!)
